The athlete journey
Every champion starts somewhere.
From a first trial class to the possibility of representing Selangor — a structured, step-by-step pathway built on character first.
Stage 01
A first step onto the mat
Children are welcomed with no prior experience needed. A trial class introduces the dojo, the coaches and the basics of moving safely.
- No martial arts background required
- Suitable for all fitness levels and body types
- Comfortable sportswear and a water bottle for the trial
Stage 02
Safe foundations first
Students learn proper falling techniques (ukemi) before learning throws, developing body awareness, coordination and confidence.
- Ukemi and safe falling
- Fundamental movement and balance
- Dojo etiquette and respect
Stage 03
Structured, step-by-step growth
Classes are structured by age and ability. Coaches guide each student at a pace suited to their development, setting achievable goals along the way.
- Technical foundations
- Progressive, achievable goals
- Consistency and training discipline
Stage 04
Competition for those who choose it
Competition is available for interested students, but it is not our primary focus. Those who wish to compete are prepared for the physical, technical and mental demands.
- Optional — every child benefits regardless
- Competition readiness and experience
- Physical preparation
Stage 05
An aspiration, earned over time
Students who demonstrate commitment, skill and competitive potential may have opportunities at local, state and national level. Our goal is to help aspiring athletes progress towards representing Selangor and Malaysia.
- Subject to individual development and readiness
- Subject to applicable selection criteria
- Strategic athlete development typically takes 4–6 years
Every athlete’s progression depends on individual development, readiness, commitment and the selection criteria set by the relevant competition or governing body. MKC does not guarantee competitive results or representative selection.
Achievements
Progress built through discipline.
Strategic athlete development requires four to six years of training and discipline. Historical results are shown separately from future ambitions.

Judo for schools
Bringing judo to the next generation.
Our mission is to make judo accessible to more children and families in the Klang Valley. We’re building a school outreach programme so more young people can discover the sport and its values.
- Introductory demonstrations, taster workshops or recurring programmes
- Safe falling taught first, suitable for complete beginners
- A clear pathway into club training for interested students
The programme is in development. No school partnerships are listed until a school has confirmed and agreed to be named.
Beyond the mat
Lessons that last a lifetime.

FAQ
Questions parents ask.
Answers to the most common questions about starting judo at MKC.
What age can my child start judo?
We welcome children from as young as 4 years old. Classes are structured according to age and ability to ensure a safe, enjoyable and effective learning experience for every child.
Does my child need any prior experience?
No. Most of our students start with no martial arts background. Our coaches will guide them step by step at a pace suitable for their age and development.
What should my child bring for the first class?
Comfortable sports attire and a water bottle are sufficient for trial classes. If your child decides to continue, our team will advise on obtaining a judogi (judo uniform).
Is judo safe for children?
Yes. Safety is our top priority. Students are taught proper falling techniques (ukemi) before learning throws, helping them develop body awareness, coordination and confidence while minimising the risk of injury.
Is Merking Judo Club focused on competition?
Competition is available for students who are interested, but it is not our primary focus. We believe judo is a powerful platform for developing character, discipline, resilience and confidence. Every child can benefit from judo regardless of whether they choose to compete.
Are there opportunities to represent Selangor?
Students who demonstrate commitment, skill and competitive potential may have opportunities to participate in local, state and national competitions. Our goal is to help aspiring athletes progress towards representing Selangor and Malaysia. Selection is always subject to the criteria of the relevant competition or governing body.
